McDonald
& Rutter was founded in January 1994 by Charles McDonald
and Jonathan Rutter.
The company now has a permanent staff of 17 and specialises
in feature film, television and theatre publicity campaigns.
As far as feature film work is concerned, M+R handles
campaigns during production, at major European film festivals,
and for UK and international distribution. In addition,
M+R handles corporate publicity for UK production and
distribution companies (current accounts include BBC Films)
and year-end award campaigns on behalf of American studios.
Ongoing relationships with many major directors have
resulted in the company working on most of the recent
films of such directors as David Lynch, John Sayles, Mike
Leigh, Peter Greenaway, Ken Loach, Jane Campion, Jim Jarmusch,
Pedro Almodovar, Lynne Ramsay, Shane Meadows, Todd Solondz,
the Coen Brothers, Gus Van Sant, Lars von Trier, Anthony
Minghella and Todd Haynes.
UK distribution campaigns include Vera Drake, The Hitchhiker’s
Guide to the Galaxy, My Summer of Love, Team America,
Downfall, Billy Elliot, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,
Amelie, Gosford Park, Iris, Bend it like Beckham, Talk
to Her, Far From Heaven, The Pianist, The Hours, Lost
In Translation, School of Rock, Monster and Bad Education.
M+R regularly have a major presence at the leading European
Festivals – Cannes, Venice and Berlin. Examples
include Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers winner of
this year’s Cannes Grand Prix du Jury at Cannes,
and Palme d’Or winners such as Lars von Trier’s
Dancer in the Dark (2000), Roman Polanski’s The
Pianist (2002) and Gus van Sant’s Elephant (2003).
Recent Berlin highlights have included Robert Altman’s
Gosford Park (2002) Stephen Daldry’s The Hours (2002),
Rob Marshall’s Chicago (2003), Richard Linklater’s
Before Sunset (2004),Patty Jenkins’ Monster (2004)
and Golden Bear winner Mark Dornford-May’s U-CARMEN
eKHAYELITSHA (2005). Golden Lion winners Monsoon Wedding,
directed by Mira Nair (2001) and Mike Leigh's Vera Drake
(2005), Todd Haynes’ Far From Heaven (2002), and
Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation (2003) represent
just a few of the high profile titles represented by M+R
at Venice in recent years.
On the television front, M+R handles both production
and transmission publicity for a number of high profile
dramas and documentaries. Examples include the award-winning
dramas The Deal and Buried for Channel 4 and documentaries
such as Naked Hollywood for BBC 2 and Vile Bodies for
Channel 4. Recent work includes three dramas for Channel
4 – Sex Traffic, Not Only but Always and Elizabeth
I.
In February 2004 Janine Shalom joined M+R to set up a
Theatre Publicity Department. As well as handling publicity
for plays and musicals both in the West End and on the
Fringe, M+R Theatre’s wide-ranging portfolio includes
the promotion of Arts Festivals, the launching of theatre
spaces, one-person shows and site specific projects. Since
its creation the department has formed ongoing relationships
with many of the UK’s major arts establishments
including the Almeida Theatre Company, RADA, the Tricycle
Theatre, the Unicorn Theatre and the Young Vic, as well
as many leading West End and Broadway Producers.
